Bowen Island Elopement
If you are searching for a quiet, serene spot to exchange your vows, a Bowen Island elopement might be perfect for you. Francesca & Guido weren’t quite sure on a location when we started planning, but after all was said and done, I couldn’t have imagined a better place for their day. From the lush forest to the tranquil coastline, this little island did not disappoint!
When Francesca & Guido first reached out about planning their Bowen Island elopement, they weren’t quite sure what it would all look like. They decided that they wanted to elope in mid-September, and by mid-October, we made it happen. Originally they thought Moraine Lake in Banff would be the perfect place to get married as that’s where Guido proposed, but after going through logistics, and realizing the uncertainty of when the road to the lake closes, they decided to do something more local. They are both from Italy, and decided to take on the van life in their VW here in North America where they travelled Central America, the US, and once COVID hit, Canada! They actually heard about me through another couple they met on the road who were doing something similar and who eloped in the summer in Squamish.
After realizing that they wanted to do something by the water, they settled in on Bowen Island for its natural beauty and quiet lifestyle. They found a one-room Airbnb that was both central and felt secluded in the forest where they both got ready but managed not to see each other in the process!
What I loved about Francesca & Guido’s elopement was they made every part of it special and unique to both of them. They have a special fascination with swings, and it was a running joke that he would propose on a swing, but that plan never happened. So they literally build their own swing from wood and rope and set it up on a tree that hung over a beach at their ceremony location. Both of them loved biking together, and so for a fun picture, they set up their “getaway car” complete with a “just married” sign and cans dragging on the concrete. Even their picnic had some personal touches with their favourite champagne. Everything was very intentional and well thought out, and it really showed!
Tips for eloping on Bowen Island:
Stay at Nectar Yoga Lodge: If you are dreaming of a Bowen Island elopement, Nectar Lodge is a no-brainer. They have a variety of cabins nestled in the centre of the island so that you feel in the middle of the forest. In addition to Yoga sessions in their special dome, they also have breakfast available that are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free friendly.
Have Good Shoes to Explore Nature: If one things for certain, you’re probably looking into Bowen Island as a location because it’s away from the hustle & bustle of Vancouver. There is a lot of forest, beaches, and rocky cliffs to explore, so good footwear is important! Regardless of the season, you’ll need some good grip, and if you’re going there in the winter, coverage for mud or water is important.
Summer is Busy: This goes without saying for most places, but just remember that accommodations book up fast, and a private ceremony location will be harder to find. As I always recommend, consider having a weekday elopement to give yourself more flexibility and options for locations and accommodations.
Rent a Scooter from Zoom Zoom: The island is pretty small, which means it only takes about 15-20 minutes to drive from one end of the island to the other. The roads have a low-speed limit, and every turn has beautiful forests or interesting houses. I recommend exploring these unique places via a Vino scooter so you can really experience the island to its fullest. Not only are they fun, but they also make for great pictures!
