Sky Helicopters Elopement in Pitt Meadows

For this stunning elopement, we explored Vancouver from above with Sky Helicopters! Jesserae and Jason started with first looks in Stanley Park before heading to Pitt Meadows to catch their ride to get married on a mountaintop. That’s the beauty of a helicopter elopement in Vancouver, adventure and ease all in one!

Before we rave about Sky Helicopters and gush over these helicopter elopement photos, I first wanted to share a bit about how I met Jesserae and Jason. They reached out to me through my inquiry form, just as any couple would. However our call together was a bit different than my typical call. You see, just days before our call, I got appendicitis and had to reschedule their call several times. Still in the hospital, but feeling better, I decided I was ready to finally take the client calls I had to postpone. Yes, I know how crazy that sounds! But weddings are an important matter! Thankfully the lovely nurses gave me a quiet room to work out of, and it felt great to do something normal that day!

Fast forward to a beautiful, clear May day – a perfect day for a helicopter elopement in British Columbia! Jesserae and Jason decided on a first look at Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver. Their families were there and we took some sweet portraits as they cut their cake before we set off on their adventure in the sky. Only their mothers came along on the helicopter ride, which worked perfectly! They got to include their loved ones and have an intimate ceremony somewhere magical. A win-win if you ask me!

We headed to Pitt Meadows, where Sky Helicopters is located, to catch their ride to the ceremony site. In May, the mountains are still covered with snow, but the weather isn’t too cold, making it ideal for a snowy mountaintop ceremony! Plus if you aren’t much of a hiker, but love those stunning alpine views, a helicopter elopement is a no-brainer!

Jesserae and Jason had a lovely ceremony in front of the snowy peaks followed by a toast to forever! Their portraits speak to just how much fun they had on their adventure. But the fun didn’t stop in the mountains! We made a stop at Pitt Lake after the flight for a picnic and some downtime, plus some more portraits!

It was a really good day! Beautiful weather, an epic adventure, a bit of family time, and some seriously sweet wedding photos that you don’t want to miss!

But before you go scrolling through their gallery, you’re probably wanting the details for planning your own helicopter elopement in Vancouver.

Tips for a Sky Helicopters elopement:

Choose your season! It really just depends on what you are envisioning for your day. If you want..

  • sunny warm days with now snow, aim for the months of July and August.

  • all of the snow, you’ll want to go during the months of December to March.

  • snowy peaks and frozen, but warmer days, the spring months of May, June, and early July.

Unlike other areas of British Columbia, helicopters in the Vancouver area are more likely to fly in inclement weather! While weather can still cancel flights, it’s much less common than in areas like Whistler or Squamish. But it’s still so important to…

Be flexible! Just because flights can be cancelled due to weather, doesn’t mean you can’t book an adventure session stress free. You just need to be prepared! My best tip would be to plan a day as a backup option if your original date has a chance of bad weather. Better yet, block off a week where you could fly! I do understand that this is not possible for everyone, so having an idea of a non-weather dependent adventure is recommended too!

Pick a time of day! It’s all about the light! With most helicopter companies, you can fly for sunset photos which is the usual favourite. The latest I’ve been able to fly with SKY Helicopters has been around 6 or 6:30pm. Depending on the season, these times might change with the sunset times. Speaking generally, I’d always recommend booking the very last flight if possible. The lower the sun is in the sky, the better chance we have of dreamy images. So my second choice would be the very first flight of the day! You might not be a morning person and it’s definitely a colder option, but it beats midday direct sunlight overhead I promise

Keep it small! For logistical reasons, it’s always easier with just you and your partner. With both the pilot and me as witnesses, it’s 100% possible. But I know that sometimes you want close family or friends along for the adventure. If extra seats are available, it’s an easy fix. It’s also a possibility to do two helicopters or take turns bringing you up, but in all honesty, sometimes it’s a bit of a logistical nightmare. Just keep that in mind when planning! The smaller the better.

For example, Jesserae and Jason brought along their mothers for the helicopter tour and met the rest of their loved ones to cut the cake! It worked out perfectly.

Schedule extra time with the photographer outside of the flight! As magical as those mountain tops are for your adventure experience, the photos are not always exactly what you might imagine. The lighting is a tricky game to play with the times of day. So just to make sure you get dreamy sunset images, plan another after-flight adventure with your photographer. Jesserae and Jason added a first look and a picnic to their day for a variety of photos!
