Where’s the Best Place to Watch a Sunset in Whistler?

But in all honesty, the real question might be how to get to the best places to watch the sunset in Whistler. As you might guess, the mountains that surround the town offer the best views for that dreamy golden hour followed by alpine glow. There are endless stunning spots to add a romantic sundown vibe to your adventure elopement or couples session, but the key is finding a way to get up to them.

When searching how to catch the best sunset in Whistler, your first guess might be a helicopter or gondola ride up to the mountaintops. These are super fun options that undoubtedly bring something unique to your day, but unfortunately, they aren’t the right option due to their limited hours and timing of sunset throughout the year. If you’re looking to take time to soak in that golden glow, you should book a 4x4 tour to take you to higher elevations.

And there’s no contest who does it best. Canadian Wilderness Adventures are rated #1 in the area for good reason. With exclusive access to otherwise unreachable portions of the mountain range, you’ll be whisked up on a 4x4 jeep tour, choosing the locations you like most, often spotting wildlife along the way. End your night with a picnic or a toast as the sun goes down over Whistler Mountain and distant views of The Black Tusk. As an elopement photographer who has spent many wedding days in Whistler, I can tell you this experience is easily in my top recommendations.

Kayla and Jeremy’s Whistler Sunset Elopement

You don’t have to just take my word for it either! Kayla and Jeremy had one of the dreamiest weddings of the season with their sunset elopement adventure with Canadian Wilderness. Opting for a July wedding for the best chances of weather and boy did it work out!

As I do with all of my couples, we talked before their day about what mattered to them most. Getting ready coverage, details, ceremony, portrait photos, and so on. They shared they cared most about capturing the story of their adventure, so we customized their coverage timeline based on that. They got ready where they were staying, but we met at Green Lake to officially begin our day together.

A short, but incredibly sweet ceremony officiated by Sherry kicked off their day, right in front of the glacial turquoise waters of Green Lake (the best in my opinion). Kalya really wanted wildflowers and we were lucky enough to find a bunch of fireweed in bloom. With the itch to do a little hiking, we headed to Brandywine Falls. We spent a bit exploring, Kayla’s dress flowing around in the wind, capturing the complete awe of their faces as they took in the beauty of the terrain around them. This might be the best part of my job – watching people who visit this insanely beautiful area soak it all in. Living near the Sea-to-Sky is something I’ll never take for granted!

We took a quick break to regroup before heading to meet the pros over at the Canadian Wilderness Adventures base. I’ve gone on several tours with them and each one is so exciting and unique. For Kayla and Jeremy’s day, we spotted a bear from afar, often wandering up the ski hill to snack on berries in the summer, and laughed at some cheeky marmots scurrying around. A wildlife lover’s dream! We ended the evening in a cozy subalpine area with a picnic and the best place to watch the sunset in Whistler.

5 Reasons to Book a 4x4 Adventure for your Whistler Elopement

  1. Sunsets are stellar!

When eloping in Whistler on a helicopter tour, the timing doesn’t work out to view the sunset from the alpine. But with 4x4s, you can stay longer and enjoy it! Plus the early sunset in the valley is nothing compared to the mountaintop.

  2. Weather worries don’t add stress to your day.

Helicopter elopements only happen in bluebird weather conditions and BC is known to have a rainy day or two of clouds and overcast. 4x4 elopements are still an incredible experience even if the weather isn’t optimal, plus your tour won’t be cancelled!

  3. The views are incredible.

You don’t sacrifice any scenic views by summiting the mountain by 4x4 rather than by helicopter. I promise!

  4. Helicopter tours are very schedule-driven.

You don’t get as much time in the mountains as you might like, for things like ceremonies, picnics, toasts, or sunsets. 4x4s are flexible in time and how much exploring you can do! Compared to helicopter tours, you get much more time to explore, have ceremonies, picnics, toasts, and of course, watch the sunset.

  5. Get more adventure for less money!

If budget is a factor, 4x4s are an incredible Whistler elopement adventure that truly gives you more bang for your buck. If you have a couple of guests coming along, you’d likely have to rent two helis or cut guest lists, but not with a jeep.
